It's about time! I have high hopes one organization will allow us to focus efforts in a single direction, working to bring to our profession the recognition we deserve and am ready to give my time to any committee working toward that goal. I am looking forward to a HIGH ENERGY gathering in Reno next year!!

I thought this day would never happen—not in my life time! The first thing I did this morning was to see if it was the end of October, and if the Chicago Cubs had won the World Series.

It was formally announced today at the 2007 American Society of Healthcare Central Service Professionals (ASHCSP) Conference that they would be merging with the International Healthcare Central Service Materiel Management (IAHCSMM). These were words I never thought I would hear. A merger between these two associations was LONG overdue, and many thought would never happen—not in our lifetimes. It is a step forward, one that definitely makes history for the central service profession. Egos will need to be checked at the door, and those involved will need to work together for the betterment of the profession.

Working together for the first time should be advantageous for those in central service/sterile processing departments across the United States. It will provide better educational offerings, better attended conferences and one unified voice that will help to lobby for advancement of its professionals—who are some of the most important, and often overlooked, employees in the healthcare setting.

More information on this landmark announcement is available at www.iahcsmm.org and www.ashcsp.org.

I applaud those involved in making this a reality. It is something that should have been done more than a decade ago. Congratulation to both organizations for seeing the light, and finally recognizing what is really needed for the good of the profession.

It is very gratifying to know there is such a positive response to this. I even saw it at the ASHCSP meeting when their membership gave the announcement a standing ovation!

What a grand time we are going to have in Reno. If celebrating the 50th anniversary wasn’t enough, then add this to it and I can hardly wait. I have always been so impressed with the talent we have in the organization and now joining it with the dynamic people from ASHCSP presents endless opportunities.
Betty Strickland
St Joseph Medical Center
Director of Clinical Resources and Sterile Processing Houston Market

IAHCSMM’s Professional Resource and Development Council (PDRC) applauds the merger of ASHCSP and IAHCSMM. We look forward to working with our colleagues from ASHCSP in the coming weeks and months to further our mutual goals of providing quality education, certification, and support for CS professionals.
Lisa Huber, Patti Koncur, Natalie Lind, Cheron Rojo, Jean Sargent

I have just returned from the ASHCSP conference in St. Louis. It was my first time to attend one of their conferences. I have been in the field of CS/SPD since 1978 and am very pleased and honored to be part of this historical event! I feel that this can be the opportunity for the people in our profession to band together and raise the bar. It is about time that we work together to raise the consciousness of the nation and medical professionals.
